Summer Training Information

Want to get involved with the Suitcase Clinic, but were unable to take the HMS course? Come to our summer training series to receive the training necessary to become a caseworker. After completing the three mandatory sessions, you will be able to volunteer at any of our three drop-in centers.

The trainings will be held over two consecutive Saturdays, June 14 & 21, from 9 AM to 1 PM, location TBA. In addition to attending both mandatory classroom training sessions, you must also shadow a caseworker at one of our three drop-in centers (on either June 16 or 17) in order to successfully complete the training series.

Please check this website after June 1st for more information, including the location of the training series.

Suitcase Clinic Summer Volunteer Trainings

Are you interested in becoming a part of the Suitcase Clinic, but are unable to take Health and Medical Sciences 98/198 during either the fall or spring semester? Consider attending our day-long Summer Training Session, which will be held on June 23rd from 10:00 AM-4:00 PM in 122 Barrows Hall. This will be hosted in order to train new volunteers to staff our three drop-in centers in the city of Berkeley. You will be fully qualified to volunteer upon the completion of the training session, with experience commensurate to that which would be gained through HMS 98/198. You will be expected to volunteer as a caseworker at our three drop-in centers within the city of Berkeley at least four times upon the successful completion of this training regiment. No reservations are required in advance; simply show up on June 23rd and you will receive all the requisite briefing and documentation. Keep updated by reviewing our website, www.suitcaseclinic.org, and you optionally subscribe to our volunteer mailing list, through which you will receive regular updates about our organization, by sending an email to majordomo. General Clinic Potluck Dinner

The Dinners HMS 98/198 small group will be hosting a dinner at the General Clinic this upcoming Tuesday (April 17th), and thought that it would be fun to have a potluck with contributions from all of the Planning Committee staff and HMS 98/198 students. Dinners start at 7:30, so the food should be brought to the General Clinic by 7:00. If you want to contribute something but are unable to make it, we are happy to arrange to pick up the food from you. If you are interested in contributing, please email Courtney Hernandez (%20court) by this Sunday.

David Thompson (DT)

The General Clinic’s security specialist, David Thompson (DT), has been hospitalized since late December due to a very severe case of pneumonia which resulted in several life-threatening complications, requiring emergency surgery. He is currently in recovery, and has made tremendous progress, though doctors predict that his treatment will take several months to fully complete. His wife has established a website which chronicles his, and her, journey through this challenging time. Please visit it and wish DT well. He has rendered us countless services throughout the years, and has served a valuable and essential role within the Suitcase Clinic.

“Homes for Humans: Rethinking Homelessness from the Ground Up”

Complementing Naseem Bazargan’s study, “Chaos and Control: A look into the radical culture of the Suitcase Youth Clinic,” is an equally compelling treatise by Natalie Khorochev entitled “Homes for Humans: Rethinking Homelessness from the Ground Up.” A Suitcase Clinic alumna who received extensive recognition for her thoughtful and inspiring tenure as General Clinic Coordinator, Natalie Khorochev authored this thorough exploration of homelessness for her honors thesis in UC Berkeley’s department of Sociology. It is an important document in the history of our organization, insofar as it makes extensive reference to the shared culture and ethos of the Suitcase Clinic, particularly that of our SPEAC (Student Project for Education and Advocacy in the Community) subdivision. It represents a professional application of our methodology towards a noble goal, and all of our volunteers are encouraged to benefit from her effort. The Suitcase Clinic is fortunate to have received her attention, and wishes her the best with her future endeavors. An abstract is also available. As always, all Suitcase Clinic volunteers, current and alumni, are encouraged to share their research projects with our extended online community.

The entirety of the study can be read below in a search engine-friendly format:
