Berkely Project Collaboration

Our participation in the Berkeley Project was a tremendous success. Kara, Karandeep, and the SPEAC/SHARE small group all deserve a big hand. Volunteers painted the bathrooms and showers at the Willard site, conducted needs assesments, and painted at the Berkeley Multi-Agency Service Center (MASC) site. Karandeep did a phenomenal job as Site Leader at the MASC site, and we were able to achieve a tremendous amount of work there as a result of his dedication. The teriffic success there and at the Willard Pool under Kara should serve as sufficient evidence to everyone that the SPEAC/SHARE small group is an incredibly productive and viable addition to the Thursday class, one that will certainly endure during subsequent semesters as a result of their achievement.

The amount of planning and preparation these that two UGSIs put into their group project was very inspiring, and will serve as a model for all future iterations of this small group. Congratulations to both of you, and to all of the HMS 98/198 students in your small group! Overall the event ran smoothly, and it was awesome to see the change accomplished by some very motivated volunteers. We also passed out educational information on some of the misconceptions of homelessness and provided the volunteers with links to websites where they could educate themselves. Thank you to everyone who came and helped out.

HMS 98/198 Midterm Information

Thursday is the midterm. The midterm will be two parts: the first half will be a written portion,
the second half will be a role playing exercise. The reader provides an excellent outline of the midterm and some specific things to study. Also, please know and be comfortable with the four steps of working with a suicidal client. You will be tested on the steps in the reader, so make sure to go over those.

I’ve also included some crisis and domestic violence hot lines you should be aware of when working with clients:

“Chaos and Control: A look into the radical culture of the Suitcase Youth Clinic”

In the spring of 2006, a UC Berkeley undergraduate named Naseem Bazargan conducted an extensive study of the Suitcase Clinic’s Youth Clinic drop-in center. Informing her investigation was a lengthy and exemplary volunteer record with the Suitcase Clinic, having served with tremendous distinction as Youth Clinic Coordinator and Health and Medical Sciences 98/198 Class Coordinator. Her painstaking research ultimately culminated in her honors thesis for the department of Sociology, a thoughtfully crafted document titled “Chaos and Control: A look into the radical culture of the Suitcase Youth Clinic.” Her work contributes richly to the inherited culture, ethos and intellectual tradition of the Suitcase Clinic. All of our volunteers, along with anyone interested or invested in the fields of Public Health and Social Welfare, are encouraged to learn from her study. The Suitcase Clinic is proud to have received her devoted attention, and greatly benefits from her findings.

The entirety of the study can be read below in a search engine-friendly format:

Minutes from HMS 98/198 Open Meeting on 4/27/05

I. Youth – relevance to class
- has been more communication between clinic and class
- students are willing to help
- defining roles has been difficult – most students are in the kitchen
- people who come at beginning are those who come in the end
- tend to stay more, as have increased experience
- maybe force people to come first, as they would get more accustomed to the clinic atmosphere
- what can class do?
- no one knows what they’re doing – those that come more often realize their role more quickly than others
- idea of coming by first 4 weeks
- when introducing youth at the beginning of the semester, stress the time commitment, so conflicts cannot be an excuse later on
- less volunteers than more, as with too many, they all can’t come
- perhaps shorter shift before midterm (shadow before midterm)
