CaPA (California Physicians Alliance) is sponsoring a speaker training, led by Don Bechler, on Saturday, May 12, in West Berkeley. It should be both a great way to hone lobbying skills for California’s Universal Health Care Bill SB 840, and a great opportunity for public speaking and health advocacy work in general. CaPA is hoping to get more students involved. Several JMP students have flown to Boston, Philadelphia, and Santa Monica to have such trainings, but we’re lucky to have a training for free in our own town when we’re finished with classes.

In the Spring of 2006, a Joint Medical Program student named Marcela Smid wrote a thesis in partial satisfaction for the requirements for the degree of Masters of Science in Health and Medical Sciences in the Graduate Division of the University of California at Berkeley. Titled “‘Help me!’ and ‘Leave me alone!’ - The Pregnancy Experiences of Telegraph ‘Street Kids,’” this study thoroughly explores the decision-making processes surrounding pregnancy which are experienced among young homeless women and their partners in the city of Berkeley. This impressive document makes extensive reference to interviews conducted and data collected at the Suitcase Clinic’s Youth Clinic, and represents a crucial piece of scholarship on our organization’s mission and efficacy. Writing it was in itself an act of empowering the underserved, and Marcela has contributed richly to the Suitcase Clinic’s body of literature.
The entirety of the study can be read below in a search engine-friendly format: Continue reading ‘“‘Help me!’ and ‘Leave me alone!’ - The Pregnancy Experiences of Telegraph ‘Street Kids’”’

1. Chelsea
SHARE participants discussed on 3/21/06 which potential projects sounded the most important. Housing was decided upon, along with showers.
There was a discussion between whether our goals as an organization should be to make people comfortable while they are homeless, or to help people get out of being homeless altogether.
The free wireless Internet and laptop use at General Clinic project was also popular. One proposed idea is to negotiate with the university to setup special accounts for clients whom are regulars at Suitcase Clinic, and whom we thus have a relationship with.
Regarding the library project, Chelsea is going to draft a response letter to the University’s own response letter. The SHARE meeting on 4/4/06 will feature a discussion about the library project, and there will be a special meeting for people interested in contributing to the response to the university’s letter.
Three other good ideas have come out of SHARE. One is to do an educational event on hate crimes, gathering data on housing and shelters, and trying to expand shower hours so there are more showers available at morning and at night. It might be a good idea to meet with Julie, the city’s Director of Homeless Policy.
