Berkely Project Collaboration

Our participation in the Berkeley Project was a tremendous success. Kara, Karandeep, and the SPEAC/SHARE small group all deserve a big hand. Volunteers painted the bathrooms and showers at the Willard site, conducted needs assesments, and painted at the Berkeley Multi-Agency Service Center (MASC) site. Karandeep did a phenomenal job as Site Leader at the MASC site, and we were able to achieve a tremendous amount of work there as a result of his dedication. The teriffic success there and at the Willard Pool under Kara should serve as sufficient evidence to everyone that the SPEAC/SHARE small group is an incredibly productive and viable addition to the Thursday class, one that will certainly endure during subsequent semesters as a result of their achievement.

The amount of planning and preparation these that two UGSIs put into their group project was very inspiring, and will serve as a model for all future iterations of this small group. Congratulations to both of you, and to all of the HMS 98/198 students in your small group! Overall the event ran smoothly, and it was awesome to see the change accomplished by some very motivated volunteers. We also passed out educational information on some of the misconceptions of homelessness and provided the volunteers with links to websites where they could educate themselves. Thank you to everyone who came and helped out.

Minutes from SPEAC Meeting on 9/11/06

Present: Kara, Karandeep, Stephanie, Amit, Natalie, Andrew

Small Group
There are 13 people in the small group. This week they are going to talk about putting an agenda together. There will be a half-hours worth of agenda next week. SPEAC members will come to SHARE once in September and twice in October.
Conducting a needs assessment is a possibility for the General clinic. Organizing a film Screening is very doable.
The small group can put on dinners and also can clean-up showers in Willard through the Berkeley Project.
SHARE requires not just one visit but rather a full education campaign.
The dyad will cover ideas for the group project. There will also be an awareness talk.
The Berkeley project (bp.berkeley.edu) may be able to provide funding for SPEAC/SHARE.
SPEAC/SHARE should petition ExComm for allocating funds to SPEAC/SHARE projects.

Minutes from SPEAC Meeting on 3/22/06

1. Chelsea
SHARE participants discussed on 3/21/06 which potential projects sounded the most important. Housing was decided upon, along with showers.
There was a discussion between whether our goals as an organization should be to make people comfortable while they are homeless, or to help people get out of being homeless altogether.
The free wireless Internet and laptop use at General Clinic project was also popular. One proposed idea is to negotiate with the university to setup special accounts for clients whom are regulars at Suitcase Clinic, and whom we thus have a relationship with.
Regarding the library project, Chelsea is going to draft a response letter to the University’s own response letter. The SHARE meeting on 4/4/06 will feature a discussion about the library project, and there will be a special meeting for people interested in contributing to the response to the university’s letter.
Three other good ideas have come out of SHARE. One is to do an educational event on hate crimes, gathering data on housing and shelters, and trying to expand shower hours so there are more showers available at morning and at night. It might be a good idea to meet with Julie, the city’s Director of Homeless Policy.
