Suitcase Class Syllabus

Application Instructions

Submit your completed application to 570 University Hall by Wednesday September 10th at 3:00
P.M. It will be briefly reviewed by the class coordinators, who will randomly select 50 completed
applications. The selected applications will then be used to construct the class based on small group
preferences and drop-in center availability. Though we expect you to complete the application
thoroughly and thoughtfully, the selection process is mostly random–everybody has an equal
chance of being accepted. This process is not meant to be capricious. Instead, it was the fairest and
most democratic method we could devise. (You know, the whole “practice what you preach” thing.)

Tours of the drop-in centers will be held on Monday, September 8 at the Womenʼs and Youth Clinics and on Tuesday, September 9 at the General Clinic during operating hours. In order for your application to be considered complete, you must attend one of these tours. Tours will leave from the Sproul Fountain at the time designated. Make sure your name is taken down. You are encouraged to tour as many clinics as you are interested in.

General Clinic: 7:00 PM, 7:30 PM, 8:00 PM.
Womenʼs Clinic: 7:30 PM and 8:00 PM.
Youth Clinic: 7:00 PM and 7:30 PM.

Get your start as a volunteer by taking HMS 98/198 this semester. Come to the first class meeting on Thursday, September 4 at 5PM in 100 Wheeler Hall to find out how to apply for the class. Applications will be made available.

Tours of the drop-in centers will be held on Monday, September 8 at the Women’s and Youth Clinics and on Tuesday, September 9 at the General Clinic. Applications for the course are due by Wednesday, September 10 by 4PM in 570 University Hall. Students who are accepted into the class will be informed that night. Entry into the course is by course entry code only; you do not need to add the course on Telebears. Waitlists will be cleared.

The trainings will be held over two consecutive Saturdays, June 14 & 21, from 9 AM to 1 PM, location TBA. In addition to attending both mandatory classroom training sessions, you must also shadow a caseworker at one of our three drop-in centers (on either June 16 or 17) in order to successfully complete the training series.
