This is an interesting article about how a former New Jersey governor voluntarily decided to don a disguise and experience what it was like to be homeless for a night: http://news.yahoo.com/former-jersey-governor-goes-undercover-homeless-man-023749042.html. It seems nice that someone of privilege is opting to learn firsthand what many of our clients experience on a nightly basis, but I do wonder whether it will produce any real change. Thoughts?

After reading your post, I immediately thought about this one article I read about Mayor Bates: http://archive.dailycal.org/article/11660/mayor_bates_calls_stint_on_streets_overwhelming_
Based off of the quotes from each politician, it seems as though Mayor Bates was not as serious about the issue of homelessness during his experience in 2005 than Richard Codey was during his. I certainly hope that Codey will use his political power to help his most vulnerable constituents, but then again he is just one man. Unfortunately, I feel that the stigma attached to homelessness and mental illness will be too powerful for him to overcome as an individual even if he dedicates all his resources to true change.
