Announcements
• People should email Courtney if they’re not able to come to PC; her email address is court@berkeley.edu
• A message board will be put up on the website soon
• Send Andrew anything that needs to be filed on the website
• Ideas from last week: time contracts for the agenda, open time for discussion at the end of PC, send agenda items to coordinators by Tuesday night, separate time for clinic updates, open facilitation, games, training, and respectful listening
• Amit has the Youth Services Directory for Berkeley for each clinic
• Time Contract for Today’s Meeting:
1. Internet/Phone Discussion: 10 minutes (+5, +3)
2. Clinics: 10 minutes
3. Trainings: 5 minutes
Internet/Phone Discussion
• General Clinic has been working for a semester to get phone and internet services for clients during Clinic
• SPEAC has been on the UCB library project to get public access reopened in the library
• Youth Clinic has also made it a goal for the semester to have phone/internet service
• Andrew needs to speak with Mary Ellen from First Presbyterian Church about Gen. Clinic services
• One idea: set up a computer lab and have 10-15 minute time slots, with rotation
• During intake, people could sign up for time slots, so internet would be a service just like the others
• SHARE wrote a letter of inquiry to the university staff about why access was restricted; the University was somewhat unresponsive and said the policy would not be changed
• The negative implications of internet access should also be addressed (people misusing the internet, etc.)
• Clinic needs to keep in mind that there has been overwhelming support for the new library policy, so it may not be possible to get the policy changed, unless the alumni address the issue
• Some people disagree with the previous comment, and think the idea is possible, but yes, alumni should be included in the plan to get public access back
• Issue: the university could easily create a CalNet system just for alumni, leaving the public still restricted
New Ideas:
• Idea: have access at just one location, such as Sproul or VLSB; the Doe library computers are also not that popular, so they could be opened up to the public
• Idea: people could bring in laptops and be signed on to the church network during clinic
• Idea: a program should be installed that would keep people signed on to the computer for only as long as they have been allotted
• Idea: start up a new, bigger petition to show student support of public library access, and to get more people involved
• Idea: give people login IDs for the library, and have them taken away if they misuse the Internet
Vote: To have PC take on the library project, or leave SPEAC/SHARE to take care of it
Majority: SPEAC will continue to work on the project
Clinics
• General Clinic is doing well; Dana is the new hair care coordinator
• No budget has been set yet for General Clinic
• Will General Clinic coordinators be coming to PC? Administrators need to speak to them
• The piano was removed from General Clinic because people have not been using it properly; although clients don’t like it, it should remain unavailable
SHARE:
• New class rules for SHARE are going well, good topics
Women’s Clinic:
• Clinic went well on Monday; there were not as many volunteers, but it ended up being a good thing
• Medical cancelled at 6 pm; there have been problems scheduling with them
• It’s been hard to get a doctor, and transitioning medical has been hard
• Dr. Steinbach needs to be contacted to find out who’s in charge of scheduling doctors
• If someone from PC could go to medical student meetings, communication would increase
• Sarah is going to email Dr. Steinbach about getting one person from each clinic to go to medical student meetings
Youth Clinic:
• Clinic had a lot of clients, but was understaffed
• Class volunteer participation needs to increase
• Clinic gets food from Berkeley Food Bank; people need to go to training for buying food- Courtney will be doing it
• Asvir will be going to the bread bank
• Jessica is trained to be Youth Clinic’s CoCA
• On October 9th, a Russian group is coming, so volunteers need to attend Clinic
• On October 23rd, the city committee is coming, so volunteers need to attend Clinic
Trainings
• Wendy Georges is willing to come in to give trainings this month or next month
• Suggested topic for next training: Community Resources
• Have her tell us about specific referrals we can give, concrete places we can refer clients to
• Training will be at 8, after PC
