Elections

Elections for the Spring 2008 PC will be held Wednesday November 28th at
6PM. Juggy and Jodi will send out an email letting you know what room it
will be held in as the date approaches. Candidates will be required to
submit an application by midnight on Wednesday November 21st.
Applications can be emailed to me at court. I know that this
date is quickly approaching, if you need an extension on the application
please let us know and we will gladly accept it. Candidates are also
required to shadow the current holder of the position they are applying
for either this week or next. Most importantly candidates need to attend
elections on the 28th and be prepared to make a 2 minute speech. Speeches
should address why you are qualified for the position and what changes you
would make if you were elected to the position. Results will be sent out
Wednesday night. Please read the election policy, it can be found at
http://www.suitcaseclinic.org/about/planning/

If you are interested in a UGSI position the process is slightly
different. Please email your completed applications to court
by Wednesday November 28th. Instead of making a speech at elections those
interested in the UGSI position will be interviewed by the 3 class
coordinators on either Saturday, December 8th or Sunday, December 9th.
Interviews will be 15 min each and will allow interested UGSI to share
their ideas about the class and their small group project. We do not have
the same small groups each semester so we are open to new ideas for small
group projects. We have 10-15 UGSIs each semester and current members of
the class as well as old volunteers are welcome to apply.

Attached is a list along with a brief description of the positions
available. All PC members are required to attend PC meetings which are
held the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month at 7PM and retreat which will
be held at the beginning of the semester. The positions with * (admin,
women’s coord, youth coord, and general coord) all require 2 semesters of
prior volunteering with the suitcase clinic to be eligible. This means 1
semester in class and 1 semester volunteering and/or PC member. All other
positions are open to anyone who has taken or is currently taking the
class.

Suitcase Clinic Grant

This is just a notice to let everyone know that Suitcase Clinic submitted a grant for the First Congregational Church of Berkeley and we were named one of the two recipients! This is the highest honor that the Church gives organizations and we out-competed over 30 other local and international non-profit organizations. We will be given half of all proceeds that are collected during Christmas or Easter, which ranges from $4000-$5000!

Keep up the great work Suitcase!!

Wellness Initiative

The Wellness Initiative was launched by the Suitcase Clinic in the Spring of 2007. Our goal is to provide weekly counseling services and workshops to help improve the mental well-being of our clients. We have established a collaboration with the Wright Institute, which currently provides us with a counselor to help our clients. In addition, we are in the midst of collaborating with the student groups The Movement and Cal Slam Poetry to provide dance and poetry workshops, respectively. We are also working on an exhibit that tells the stories of our clients through photographs, portraits and documentaries by UC Berkeley undergraduates. We hope to display our work at the end of the semester. We have received funding from the Bears Breaking Boundaries Competition and the American Medical Association, who gave us $2000 each. We are still working to expand services, and are running a pilot program at the Women’s Clinic. We are always looking for innovative ideas and are welcome to any feedback and enthusiasm! Visit our page in the “Detailed Information” section of suitcaseclinic.org for contact information.
